Asbestos is a natural, fibrous mineral that was once used in many building products due to its heat resistance, strength and chemical stability. It is often found in old roofs, façade panels, floor coverings, plasters, adhesives or fillers – especially in buildings that were constructed or renovated before 1993.
A distinction is made between firmly bonded asbestos (e.g. asbestos cement boards) and weakly bonded asbestos (e.g. sprayed asbestos or lightweight boards). The latter are considered particularly dangerous as they easily release fibers when damaged.
Asbestos fibers are extremely fine and can get deep into the lungs when inhaled. There they cause serious illnesses such as asbestosis or lung cancer. Even small releases of fibers can pose a health risk – extreme caution is therefore required when handling materials containing asbestos.
Asbestos has been banned in Germany since 1993 and throughout the EU since 2005. The new Hazardous Substances Ordinance 2024 obliges building owners to provide information on possible asbestos deposits during renovations. Buildings without evidence are generally suspected of containing asbestos.
